What a Brand Is

What we feel and say about you

Jeff Bezos said, “Your brand is what other people say about you when you’re not in the room.”

As Gary Vee put it, “Your personal brand is your reputation, and your reputation in perpetuity is the foundation of your career.”

Marty Neumeier aptly described a brand as “A customer’s gut feeling about a product, service or company.”

The common denominator in these wise sayings is that a brand is what people have in mind about you - and this affects what they feel and say about you.

If what they have in mind about you is positive vibes, they will reach out to you and work with you.

Bob Burg in his excellent book “Endless Referrals” says, “All things being equal, people do business with, and refer business to people they know, like and trust.”

Many things will influence their gut feeling about you. We are not to get caught up with selling the product - we are selling more than that. It is the experience of knowing and working with you as you solve their problems.

Have an updated website. Post regularly. Pick their calls. Talk to them nicely. Have amazing designs. Let your products do what you promise. Deliver on time. Do follow-up. Respond to feedback.

When I say ‘you,’ I mean your brand. If you are the brand, then, by all means, YOU, the reader.
