Creating Your Logo with AI Technology

One element of your brand’s visual identity is your brand logo, well, that’s obvious. However, the cost for that process can vary extremely varied. One solution that has come up in recent years is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to do logos. And, I, for one, encourage it. Lemme use Canva as an example of the platform that you can use. And, no, this post is not sponsored by Canva.

You will find a series of templates that form the basis of your design. They have quite a huge range of fonts to choose from, so if you know what brand font style you want to have, then your logo is sorted on that front. They also provide a number of shapes and elements to help in the customization of your logo.

Who can use Canva to design a logo?
  • Someone starting out and building a business in a small niche.

  • Someone with a low budget or no budget.

Why can they use Canva?
  • Save time. The logo design process is simple. It can take 5 minutes to get a logo!

  • You get exactly what you want. There’s no back and forth with a designer as you try find words to explain what you want and they misunderstand.

  • IT IS FREE! This is huge. No costs for most of the download options. No point in belaboring this point. 😁

Why shouldn’t you use Canva for logo design?
  • You don’t own the logo. Yep. The rights are reserved for Canva and you cannot trademark the design. Whether you use free or paid elements, starting with a template or from scratch, you still can’t.

  • Uniqueness. Anyone using Canva can replicate your style of design. Any of the 100 million users in the 190 countries can get a similar design. And since branding is deliberate differentiation, this might be a problem at the start or later as you grow. You may even design something similar to an existing brand and not know - leading to lawsuits on copyright infringement.

  • Less customization. The platform has a lot of elements and templates that you can work with but you can’t fully customize them. It could be a color change or the curve of a given shape that you are limited on. At the font level, they also don’t have access to most of the time-tested well-designed fonts.

  • Not a full visual identity. You don’t get a brand guideline on how to use the logo. Just the logo. A visual identity requires fonts, patterns, colors, the logo and icons. The platforms don’t give you all that and you run the risk of mismatched elements.

There are other platforms to design logos for free such as Looka, Adobe, Shopify, NameCheap, and BrandCrowd. Ultimately they are as good as the Canva logo maker and offer pretty much the same benefits and you encounter the same risks.

If the reasons to use the free logo makers outweigh the reasons not to, for you, go ahead and use them. I recommend them to those pressed financially, are building something really small, or don’t care for much customization or differentiation.

If you used free logo makers and need to rebrand, own your own brand identity, or have a comprehensive brand identity, get in touch with a branding agency of your choice and get help to stand out from the competition and grow your brand.
